MERYC ’25: on the origins of musical play with The Beast

Mobile Installations

The European Network of Music Educators and Researchers of Young Children (EuNet MERYC) is organising a conference from 14-17 May, 2025 on the theme: musical play for and by children. On behalf of Musica, colleague Loes Bruyninckx will speak about the origins of musical play through our innovative sound installation “The Beast”.

The Beast is a mobile installation based on the frame and soundboard of a buffet piano. But nothing is what it seems. You can tame The Beast, challenge it, even make it move in quirky choreography. You can play it with all kinds of materials, such as drumsticks or with your own body. Want to let The Beast grow to its full potential? Rig it up as a sound installation. Play it through extended techniques. Alone or in a group, during improvisation or playing together. Fall under the spell of The Beast.
